The Ravens were on a bye week and Ravens fans were searching for some form of entertainment during NFL Sunday that could possibly reach the level of cheering for a game similar to the Ravens 9/11 beat down of the Steelers (yes, I’m still basking in that victory). At the beginning of the season I looked at the Ravens calendar to pick out the games that were a must watch so that I could take off from work. Working in retail, I have to work most Sundays, not very conducive for an avid NFL fan such as myself, but hey I’ve got bills to pay. Being on a bye week, I choose to work this Sunday, so I was reduced to checking my ESPN app on my phone to keep up with the scores. Usually the mall is packed with Ravens jerseys, which puts me in football mode instead of work mode. I usually look at the husbands who were dragged to the mall by their wives with pity. I think, “Me, I have to work, but you…how could you let her drag you out to the mall on football Sunday…that’s just not right.” Sometimes I think like a man, I guess. But this Sunday there weren’t as many purple jerseys or “blouses” in the mall crowds, so I had to be reminded of my football focus by a co-worker who mentioned to me that New England was up 10-7. That’s when I remembered that I should be able to get home in time to watch the Atlanta/ Green Bay game.
I couldn’t wait to see the overrated Atlanta Falcons and Matt Ryan, take a beating by the dangerously improved Super Bowl champs, Green Bay Packers. Too my surprise, when I finally turned on the game after taking some time to get my daughters ready for school Monday morning, Atlanta was up 2 touchdowns. What?!!! Is Green Bay really deciding to lay an egg this week against the Falcons? Are the Falcons all of a sudden deciding to have some defense? This can’t be right, and then midway through the third quarter Green Bay decides to kick a 56 yard field goal to get within 5 points of Atlanta. Although Green Bay was still down, I knew that ambitious move was going to catapult them into a huge momentum shift…and then Aaron Rodgers threw a 70 yard touchdown to James Jones.
Atlanta could only respond with 2 picks and Green Bay went on to win 25-14. Green Bay is looking pretty unstoppable right now while Atlanta is making many analysts’ preseason picks look suspect. Not to mention, Aaron Rodgers is leaps above Tom Brady as an MVP candidate. With a pretty easy schedule for Green Bay the rest of the way, get ready football fans, the premature 16-0 talk has officially begun…
Next week…
Ravens week is back and the Texans are getting hit hard by the injury bug. How will Matt Schaub match up against that Ravens front seven? Will Jimmy Smith and Lee Evans be back on the field? Will there be another game ending pick-six like last year’s thriller? Which Joe Flacco are we going to get this week? Either way, I’m so glad the bye week is over!
